Walter Menio, 92, of Bethlehem, PA passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at Holy Family Manor in Bethlehem. Born October 23, 1919 in Philadelphia he was the son of the late Nicholas and Julia Menio. Walter was married to the late Olga Palamar Menio.
Walter served in the 22nd Infantry as a Sergeant in the First Armored Division serving in Africa and Italy during WWII. He was active in the union activities of the AFL-CIO at Bethlehem Steel. Walter was a member of the original Steel Workers Organizing Committee, which was instrumental in bringing recognition of the United Steel Workers as the legitimate representative to protect the rights of workers at Bethlehem Steel after the violent strike of 1941. He was employed as a salesman for the M.J. Earl, formerly Klein Brothers. Walter was recognized as the #1 salesman for 31 years. He was a lifelong member and trustee of St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite.
Walter is survived by his son, Michael Menio of Bethlehem, brother, John Menio of North Catasauqua and sister, Julia wife of Donald Panick of Hellertown.
Walter was preceded in death by his brothers, Alexander and Peter.
A viewing will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018 from 7-9 PM. A calling period will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the funeral home from 8:30-9:30 AM followed by an Office of Christian Burial at St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1826 Kenmore Ave, Bethlehem, PA 18018 at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Josaphat's Cemetery in Hellertown.
Memorial contributions may be made in Walter's name to the church.
