Alphonse John Calvo

Alphonse John Calvo, of Bethlehem, 92, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2014. He was born in Bethlehem on October 26, 1921; son of the late Roque and Petra (Martinez) Calvo. Alphonse was preceded in death by his son, Alan John Calvo. Alphonse was a graduate of Liberty High School and Moravian College, class of 1948. He earned his Masters Degree from Lehigh University. He was a WWII veteran having served in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea from 1943-1946 with the 153rd Engineer Battalion. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Al started his teaching career in Mancelona, Michigan in 1948 and then taught for 37 years with the Bethlehem Area School District. He coached basketball and baseball at both Broughal Junior High School and Northeast Junior High School. He was also an assistant football coach for Liberty High School. He loved teaching and coaching and followed the local teams even after his retirement. Al was inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 for baseball, basketball and football. He was a parishioner of St. Ursula Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society; he was a member of the Moravian College Blue & Grey Club, a Bethlehem Boys Club alumnus; and the DAV veterans association.

He was loved and will be greatly missed by his wife of 67 years, Ann Marie (Baca) Calvo; daughters, Karen Sweeney and her husband Patrick and Lynne Calvo; his son, Thomas Calvo; his grandsons, Terry Breidinger and his wife, Sue; Chad Breidinger; A.J. Calvo; Nick Calvo and his wife, Jessica; his granddaughter Michelle Marshank and her husband, Gabriel; great grandchildren, Noah and Luke Breidinger; Anthony Calvo and Edie, Agnes and Mae Marshank.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 6-8 PM and again on Friday from 8:30-9:15 at The Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM at St. Ursula Catholic Church, 1300 Broadway, Fountain Hill, PA 18015. Interment will follow with military honors at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
