Althea B. Mertz

Althea B. Mertz, 90, of Bethlehem passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022. Born in Lehighton on September 26, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Hulda (Smith) and Howard Berger. She was the loving wife of LaMar Mertz, Sr.

Althea was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem where she was active with their bake sales and soup kitchen. She worked as an Avon sales representative for many years. She was also a member of the Bethlehem Garden Club and volunteered countless hours at Westminster Village and as a Candy Striper at Muhlenberg Hospital. Althea enjoyed hosting tea parties for her friends and neighbors, traveling to Bed and Breakfasts with LaMar and loved her Siamese cats, especially, Mera.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 70 years, LaMar Mertz, Sr.; son, LaMar Mertz, Jr.; sister, Pauline Arner; nieces Theresa Berger and Janet Labar and nephews, Lester and William Berger. Althea was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Berger.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Another visitation will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022 from 9:30-10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with a graveside service will follow at Lehighton Cemetery.
