Barbara L. Altemus

Barbara L. Altemus, 92, of Bethlehem, passed away on Monday, May 19th, 2014 at Gracedale Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born in Douglas, AZ, the daughter of the late William and Georgia (Close) Cummins. She was the loving wife of Richard P. Altemus. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before his passing in 2010.

From 1960 to 1967 Barbara worked as a State Field Director for Auditor General. In 1972, she was elected to the Democratic State Committee and served nine terms. From 1972 to 1976 she was elected to the Democratic National Committee, elected delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention and a member of the Democratic National Committee Credential Committee. She was a former committee person for the Bethlehem City Committee and an Executive member of the Northampton Democratic Committee. In 1984, she was the State Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Delegation to National Committee in San Francisco. Barbara was a board member for the Bethlehem Musikfest Association and a 20 year volunteer.

Survivors: Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her son, Joseph P. Altemus, of Bethlehem; three daughters, Barbara Harms and husband, Barry, of Bethlehem Twp.; Margaret Rice of Emmaus; and Rose Levchak of Chester Springs, PA; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Barbara is predeceased by her brothers, Melvin and David Cummins.

Services: A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018 at 11 AM with a calling hour from 10-11 AM.

Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem.
