Bernard Tomalavage

January 9, 1931 — July 29, 2008

Bernard J. Tomalavage, 77, died on July 29, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born in New Philadelphia, Pa the son of the late William and Anna Yesacavage Tomalavage.

Bernie proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged, Bernie enlisted in the Air Force National Guard, for combined service of over 35 years.

He retired as a City of Bethlehem Firefighter after 38 years of service to his community.

Bernie is survived by his companion of 18 years, Helen A. Decker of Bethlehem; daughters, Kelly Flores of Bethlehem and April Milander of Coplay and his son Alan Tomalavage of Mesa, AZ.

He is also survived by his sisters Helen Rogowski and Joann Tullo as well as his five grandchildren, Nichole, Daniel, Cinnamon, Brooke and Taylor and three great grandsons Carlos, Esteven, and Brandon.

Bernie was a member of several local organizations including, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, The Democratic Association, The Jefferson Democratic Club, Grover Cleveland, Bethlehem Area MORA Club Rosemont Fire Co., VFW Post 8638 of Highspire, PA and the Fountain Hill American Legion.

Every year during Musikfest, Bernie and his friends would gather at the same table, known as Tommyplatz, to enjoy the music and each other's company.

Bernie was an avid hunter and enjoyed sports. He participated on the Fire Dept. baseball team and played football while in the Air Force.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 4, 2008 from 7-9 PM at Connell Funeral Home, Inc. 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem.

A Service to celebrate Bernie's life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 11AM.

Burial is private and will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
