Caroline H. Hollshwandner

Dr. Caroline H. Hollshwandner, 102, of Bethlehem, died on December 12, 2020. She was born in Bethlehem; daughter of the late Joseph and Katharina (Boden) Hollshwandner.

Dr. Hollshwandner was a 1945 graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing, Pittsburgh and graduated from Marquette University in 1949. She continued her education with a graduate degree from St. Joseph University and earned her PhD in 1972 from Thomas Jefferson.

Dr. Hollshwandner joined DeSales, then Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, in March of 1974 as founder and chair of the nursing program. A decade later, she was named project director of the newly created Master of Science in Nursing Program, the first MSN program in the Lehigh Valley, she is credited with launching the teacher-practitioner-researcher model for nursing faculty in the Lehigh Valley, which strives to keep faculty involved with practice, and practitioners involved with the educational process. DeSales honored Dr. Hollshwandner for her countless contributions with an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 1987, she was the first faculty member to receive an honorary degree from the college, and again in 1994 by appointing her to the rank of professor emerita.

She was a parishioner of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church.

Dr. Hollshwandner will be dearly missed by her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary L. Hollshwandner, Catherine Segletes, Elizabeth Drumheller, Agnes Temmel, and Rose Marie Boerner; and brothers, Frank, and Joseph Hollshwandner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Assumption BVM, 4101 Old Bethlehem Pike, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery, Bethlehem.
