Charles Richard Herbst

Charles Richard Herbst "Herbsty", son of Ralph and Cecil (Sassaman) Herbst, and husband of the late Maxine Lee Herbst, passed away at his daughter's home (Cheryl) Friday, June 8 at the age of 85. He was formerly a life long resident of Bethlehem, Pa. Charles attended Muhlenberg College prior to being drafted into the Army in December of 1944. He served as

Private First Class in the Company E Service Battalion attached to MacArthur's Head Quarter Battalion in Manila, PI and Occupied Japan during World War II. Charles retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1992 after 40 years of service. He was an active member of the United Steel Workers of America. Charles and his wife of 48 years were members of the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club, breeding and showing Shetland Sheep Dogs under the name Westwood Shelties. Charles was an avid fisherman, birdwatcher, photography enthusiast and lifelong Eagles fan. Charles also spent a great deal of time with his family.

Charles was preceded in death by an infant brother, and the late Ralph Herbst Jr.; he is survived by a brother Harry of Bethlehem. Charles was father to four children: twins- Deane Lee Herbst of State College, and Dale Lee Herbst of Doylestown; Charlene Rhea Herbst-McInerney of Bethlehem; and Cheryl Diane Herbst-Kochel, wife of Philip, of Stevens. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren (with more to come). Charles also leaves behind a loyal sheltie, George.

Funeral services will be held at Connell Funeral Home- 245 E. Broad Street Bethlehem, PA 18018 on Friday June 15,2012 at 12 Noon. A calling hour will be from 11-12 Noon prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of Lancaster County- PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604 in appreciation of the fantastic care that Charles received from the agency.
