Dorothy C. Prutzman

Dorothy “Dottie” C. Prutzman of Bethlehem, PA passed peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2018 in her home with family by her side. Dorothy was born in Philipsburg, Centre County, PA on February 7, 1925 and was the first of three daughters born to the late George Mack Cole and Dorothy Regina (Moreau) Cole. She was preceded in death by her sister, Georgine (Cole) Maco and her nephew, William J. Maco, Jr. Dorothy graduated from Morris Township High School Class of 1942. Before marriage and starting a family Dottie took aviation lessons during 1944 in hopes of joining the Womens Air Corp. She successfully performed her first solo flight on September 26, 1944 at ABE airport. During and after World War II she worked as a tele-typist for the sales department of Bethlehem Steel Company in Bethlehem and in New York City. Dorothy graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College with a Bachelors of Science in Education in June of 1962. Her career in the Bethlehem Area School District spanned 25 years in which she taught, nurtured and developed over 600 students, Dottie retired from the classroom in 1987 with a lifetime membership in the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association of the United States. During a long and healthy retirement, she volunteered at St. Lukes Hospital, was active in the Bethlehem Garden Club, and assisted in piano and musical sing-alongs at Holy Family Manor. Dottie also enjoyed frequent travel with her sister, Joanne, to popular destinations in the United States, England, France, Germany, Italy and a special pilgrimage with her sister, Georgine to Medjugorje.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Douglas W. Prutzman of Allentown, PA, sister, Joanne Cole Collette of Bethlehem, PA, two grandchildren, Courtney (Evan) Cooney of Arlington, VA and Hillary (Joel) Madden of Bethlehem, nephew David G. (Lisa) Maco of Douglassville, PA, great grand-daughter, Bronte Rose Madden of Bethlehem, great grand-niece, Mila Cody and cousin, Joyce (Richard) Devaney of Gilbertsville, PA. Dorothy is also survived by 3 grand-nephews and 2 grand-nieces.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Monday, August 20, 2018 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a special blessing at 8:45 PM at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 East Broad Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 beginning at 10:30 AM following a visitation from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Notre Dame of Bethlehem Church, 1861 Catasauqua Road, Bethlehem, PA 18018. Interment will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery in Bethlehem at 2575 Linden Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Notre Dame of Bethlehem Church or to St. Lukes Hospice of Bethlehem, PA.
