Dorothy Joan Howie

Dorothy Joan Howie, 88, of Mount Pocono, died Sunday, October 5, 2008, at St. Lukes Hospital, Fountain Hill. She was born, the youngest of nine children, on January 6, 1920, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Dr. Kamel and Amelia Merhige Khoury. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jamiel Elias Howie, in 1997. They shared many happy years living in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Miami Beach, Fla. During World War II, Dorothy, Jamiel and their children were interned in a Japanese prison camp at SantaThomas University, Manilla, Phillipines, for 36 months until they were liberated by General Douglas MacArthur in 1945. Dorothy dedicated her life to her family. She was a devoted wife and mother, and will be remembered as a loyal friend and a wonderful cook.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Dianne Anton of Greensburg, Beverly, wife of Dr. Robert E. Fuisz of New York City and Bethlehem, Carolyn, wife of Peter Boyle of San Francisco, Calif., Linda, wife of Brendan Alworth of Mount Pocono, and Patricia, wife of Sheldon Kaufman of Randolph, N.J., and 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who love her dearly. Their lives were blessed by her presence. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dr. Ledware Anton, as well as her eight siblings. She served on the board of directors of the Visiting Nurses Association of New York. She was president of the Ladies of St. Marys Orthodox Church and volunteered with the Syrian Ladies Aid Society of Brooklyn. Dorothy was an active member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, Coral Gables, Fla.

Services: Visitation, 4-8 p.m. Monday, October 6, with Trisagion prayers at 7 p.m. Monday, and 9:15-10 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, with Trisagion prayers at 10 a.m. Tuesday, all at Connell Funeral Home Inc., 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem. Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1011 Catasauqua Ave., Allentown, PA. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem.
