Dr. Neil O'Boyle Connelly passed away peacefully after a long illness, Sunday, January 27, 2013.
Born in Maybrook, New York, he was the son of Edward and Kathryn (McCormack) Connelly. He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Cecelia (Qualter), his son Michael, his sons-in-law, Douglas Weida and Marc Riddell, and his sister Rosanna Mulligan.
He is remembered by his sister Regina Flannery and her family, the Mulligan family, and his ten children and their spouses: Cecelia Connelly-Weida, Kathryn Connelly, Mary Connelly and Steve Johnson, Patricia Connelly Warren, Susan and Kevin Beauchamp, Jeanne Connelly and Kevin McQuaite, John Connelly and Renee Morrow-Connelly, Eileen and Mark Kline, Beth Loftus, Neil and Beth Connelly.
At the time of his death, he had 24 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren: Brian and Monica Weida (Brook, Mackenzie, Allison); Jerrod and Tanya Weida (Noah); Rachel and Shawn Collier (Dylan, Madeline, Julia); Daniel Weida; Marcus and Megon Riddell (William); Sherry and Don Alexander (Dorothy, Kaylee); Heather and Jeff Delle Chaie (Sophie and Joseph); Briana Warren (Hunter); Jessica and Arthur Babinski (Artie, Ava); Heather and Blake MacIver (Isla, Ralph); Jennifer Beauchamp (Aiden); Christine and Matt Shephard; Alyssa Spangler, Tim Spangler, Kara McQuaite; Caleb Connelly, Keegan Connelly; Shelby Kline, Ian Kline, Wyatt Kline; Shannon Loftus, Morgan Loftus; Owen Connelly, James Connelly.
During WW II, he bravely served his country as a scout with the rank of Private First Class in the 100th Infantry Division, 397th Infantry Regiment. He received several commendations and awards, among them the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action.
He graduated from Fordham University and went on to own two pharmacies in Monroe and Maybrook NY. He returned to school, and received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a family physician in the Allentown area since 1965. He also served as the Director of the Muhlenberg Medical Center Emergency Department.
He was a long-time member of the Cathedral Church of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown.
A public wake will be held on Friday February 1, 2013 from 6-9pm at Connell Funeral Home, 245 East Broad Street, Bethlehem PA. A catholic mass will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 11am at the Cathedral Church of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown, PA. The family requests donations be made to the general scholarship fund at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 4170 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, or to a charity of your choice, in lieu of flowers.
