Evelyn F. Murray, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 8, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Carol Murray Sowul, with whom she lived for the past seven years. She celebrated her 100th birthday on January 9, 2016 with family and friends.
Born in Lansdowne, PA, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Alvin and Laura (Wittig) Young. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Murray Jr., who died in 1994; they were married 52 years.
Evelyn was a member of St. Annes Catholic Church, Bethlehem, since 1947.
She was active in the St. Annes Sodality. Evelyn and her husband were founders of their church travel group and enjoyed many trips throughout the years. She enjoyed playing cards with the St. Annes card group well into her 90s. She also served on the Lay Advisory Board at the St. Francis Friary, Easton. In her youth, Evelyn was an accomplished pianist and athlete. She was an avid fan of Philadelphia sports teams and enjoyed attending Phillies games. She also loved vacationing with her family in Wildwood Crest, NJ for many years.
Evelyn (“Nakee,” “GiGi” ) will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Carol Murray Sowul of Tewksbury, NJ; son, Edward J. Murray III (Lee-Ellan) of Long Neck, DE; granddaughter, Christine Murray (Michael Polansky) of Middletown, MD; grandsons: Jonathan Murray (Dayna Fleming) of Corte Madera, CA; Christian Sowul (Rynn Pressick) of San Francisco, CA; Brent Sowul (Amy) of Brielle, NJ. She is also survived by her nine great-grandchildren: Jackson, Mia and Aiden Polansky; Rowan and Conor Murray; Collier and Redford Sowul; Parker and Wyatt Sowul; and her sister-in-law, Florence Murray of Wynnewood, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her son, Richard Michael Murray, and her four siblings.
Viewing hours will be held in the Connell Funeral Home, 245 East Broad Street, Bethlehem, PA on Friday, August 12, from 7 to 9 PM, and again on Saturday August 13, from 10 to 11 AM. An 11:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Annes Catholic Church, 450 Washington Avenue, Bethlehem. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Friary.
