Evelyn M. Schmitt

Evelyn M. Schmitt, 94, of Bethlehem died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in Holy Family Manor, Bethlehem. Born in Chicago she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Mabel Lortie. Her husband of almost 50 years, Frederick M. Schmitt, died in 1982.

She had volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital for many years. Evelyn was formerly a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bethlehem but in recent years had been attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She had a sharp mind and lots of energy. She truly enjoyed trips to the casino, a good card game, fishing and picnics by the lake.

She will be lovingly remembered by sons Thomas and wife Diane of Nazareth and James of Roselle, Illinois, daughters Susan Granitz and husband Ronald of Allentown, Judith Sterner of Bethlehem and Virginia Sexton of Arlington Heights, Illinois, brothers John Lortie and wife Mary of Mount Prospect, Illinois and Robert Lortie of Palos Hills, Illinois, and a sister Jean Costantino and husband Louis of Mount Prospect, Illinois. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a daughter Lynn Zellner and a grandson Bradley Strohm in 2004, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

A memorial mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00-11:00 AM in the church. Burial will follow in Holy Saviour Cemetery.
