George Francis Reisteter, 93, of Bethlehem, died on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Sacred Heart Senior Living. He was born November 10, 1925 in Bethlehem, son of the late Josef and Suzanna (Svecz) Reisteter. He was the last living member of a large Slovak family with 8 siblings. George is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Theresa Reisteter. The two met in Atlantic City NJ in 1950.
George proudly served as a WWII combat veteran in the Army. He was aboard the troopship SS Lopoldville that was torpedoed and sank in the English Channel on December 24, 1944 and he saw combat action in France. George is a purple heart recipient.
Upon returning home from war, George began his career with the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as a draftsman where he worked for many years. He also was employed at Fuller Engineering Corporation. George was a parishioner of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church.
George was a fan of Philadelphia sports teams, including the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Big 5 Basketball as well as Lehigh football and wrestling. George was an avid and active bowler most of his adult life and was proud to teach his grandchildren to bowl.
George will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary; sons, Jim, Joel, Dan and Dave Reisteter; daughters-in-law, Barbara Reisteter, Lisa Reisteter, Tiffany Reisteter; as well as his grandchildren, Joel, Matthew, and Elizabeth Reisteter (children of Jim & Barbara); Jack and Jenna Reisteter (children of Dave and Tiffany Reisteter).
The family would like to thank Georges various caregivers at Sacred Heart Senior Living, Senior Solutions, Care Patrol, and elsewhere, and the wonderful staff at Family Pillars Hospice. As well as the doctors, nurses & other staff in the Emergency Room & Behavioral Unit at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown.
Arrangements have been made with the guidance of Connell Funeral Home. The family will receive guests at Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church, 1861 Catasauqua Rd. Bethlehem, PA 18018 on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to immediately follow. Burial with military honors will be held at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Retreat House, 3918 Chipman Rd, Easton, PA 18045.
