George P. Wash Vas

George P. Wash Vas, 98, of Bethlehem, passed away on November 22, 2017. Born in the Heights of Southside Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Theresa (Freund) and John Vas. He was the loving husband of Stella P. (Pidstawski )Vas for 47 years before her passing in 1991.

After graduating from Bethlehem High School in 1937 where he played soccer, George spent time in CCC Camp during the depression and helped build the Shenandoah National Park. He proudly served his country as a United States Merchant Marine during WWII, traveling throughout the North Atlantic, Russian ports and Europe. For 40 years he ran lathes at the Bethlehem Steel Corp.before retiring in 1985.He was proud of the house he built himself, with the help from friends and family. He enjoyed sailing on the local lakes and Spruce Run in NJ and playing the harmonica and accordion at family gatherings.George was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Bethlehem and also the MORA Club.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, George J. Vas and his wife Barbara and Carol Ann Kennedy and her husband Dave; sister, Theresa Lawrence; grandchildren, Emily Kalinchock and her husband Michael, Tyler Vas and Evan Weiler and his wife Lisa and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Audrey and Matthew. George was preceded in death by his brothers, John Vass, Bill Wash and Jim Wash and grandson, Christopher Weiler.

A funeral service will be on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Viewings will be held on Monday, November 27, 2017 from 6-8p.m and also on Tuesday November 28, 2017 from 9-10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be held at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
