George Wynnycky passed away peacefully on August 8, 2012, surrounded by loving family after an aggressive battle with cancer. A native of Bethlehem, PA, he made his home in South Florida over the past two decades, the last 12 years in Deerfield Beach. He was 68.
George was born on June 3, 1944 in the village of Asbach, Bavaria, Germany. The son of Ukrainian immigrants, he was born on the farm on which his parents worked as forced laborers during WWII. In 1949, he and his family immigrated to the United States, first to Whitehaven, PA and then settling in Bethlehem, PA, first in the Heights, and then onto Fountain Hill.
A 1962 graduate of Fountain Hill High School, George enlisted in the US Navy where he proudly served from 1962-1968 as a submariner. After his honorable service, he attended and graduated Penn State University in 1972 and later obtained a master's degree. He made his career in the accounting and auditing fields, in both federal and state governments, as well as in the hospitality industry. A naturally inquisitive and personable man, George's heritage and hard-working background shaped him throughout his life.
George is survived by his wife Maria Carmen (Castro) of Deerfield Beach, FL; sons Jason Wynnycky (Susan Kozel) of Arlington, VA and Marcus Wynnycky of Sherman Oaks, CA; mother Patricia Wynnycky of Bethlehem, PA; sister Katherine Finck (Fred Finck) of Easton, PA; nephew Rev. Thomas Wanitsky of Orlando, FL. He is predeceased by his father Stanley Wynnycky, sister Olga Wanitsky, and nephew Michael Wanitsky. A viewing is scheduled at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018 for Friday, August 10, 7-9PM and Saturday, August 11, 8-10AM with funeral services thereafter at St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church 1826 Kenmore Ave. Bethlehem, PA 18018.
