Guido P. Brita

Guido P. Brita, 90, of Upper Nazareth, formerly of Bethlehem Township passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 at St. Lukes Hospice House with family members always close by his side. Born in Bethlehem on April 9, 1930, he was the son of the late Guiseppe and Romilda (Monaco) Brita. He was the loving husband of the late Nellie T. (Giordano) Brita for 57 years. They were married February 5, 1955 in Phillipsburg, NJ.

Guido graduated from Bethlehem Vocational Tech in 1948 and earned his Associates Degree in Physical Metallurgy from Penn State. He retired in 1988 from the Bethlehem Steel Homer Research Dept. where he was the chief technician in the Refractories Section for many years and was promoted to Research Engineer in the Primary Processes Division. He was a co-inventor with two patents related to “BOF” steelmaking operations and horizontal casting. After retiring, he worked all over the United States and abroad as a quality control consultant for many refractory and steelmaking companies.

Guido proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Korean War with the 25th Infantry Division where he earned the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and many other campaign medals. He was most proud of the Combat Infantry Badge he received for his service. Although he rarely discussed his military career in public, one of his war stories he would tell his grandchildren later in life was his experience during a predawn battle where he destroyed a machine gun bunker that had trapped a returning friendly patrol. He was injured at that time by enemy fire but insisted on tending to his own injuries so that the medic could deal with other injured soldiers.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and former member of Our Lady of Pompeii. Over the years, he belonged to many social and sports organizations including the Freedom High School Wrestling booster club, and Freemansburg/Bethlehem Township baseball organization. He and his wife, Nellie, were active in the Bethlehem Steel Research Mixed Bowling League and the MORA Club of Bethlehem.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Joseph Brita and his wife, Deborah, of Bethlehem, Carol Nemeth of Nazareth, Thomas Brita of Colorado Springs, CO, Charles Brita and his wife, Julie, of Bethlehem; grandchildren, Jennifer Curto and her husband, Stefano, Michele Brita, Matthew Brita and his fianc, Kathleen Garcia, John Nemeth, IV and his fianc, Katelyn Schrey, Devin Brita, Nicole Brita, Danielle Brita, Lauren Brita and Ryan Tapper; and brother, Joseph Brita. Guido was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Brita and sister, Lydia Phillips.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Lukes Hospice for their loving care during Guidos final days.
