Helen S. Smith

Helen S. Smith, 89, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 05, 2014 with family at her side. She was born in Chicago, IL, daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara (Pachut) Binda. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Smith, Sr. During World War II, Helen worked in Civil Service as a secretary at the Pentagon, where she met her husband, Robert; who was serving in the US Army. From 1974 to 1993 Helen worked as a twister for Synthetic Thread and from 1993 to 1997 Helen worked for the Bethlehem Area Public Library. Helen was a parishioner of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church. She was very active in her community at Monocacy Tower, enjoyed playing bingo at the Astor and had great fun with her friends and family at the Golden Gate Diner.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Barbara Galowitch of Bethlehem; Robert J. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Yvonne of Lebanon, PA; Carole Harris and her husband James of Richboro, PA; Raymond R. Smith of Allentown; William J. Smith and his wife, Maryann Adams of Hellertown and James M. Smith and his wife, Melissa of Alburtis; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and her brothers, Joseph and John Benda of Highland, IN and Stanley Benda of Santa Barbara, CA. She was predeceased by her brother Walter Benda; son-in-law, Richard Galowitch and grandson, Jason.

A visitation will be held on Monday, June 9, 2014 from 10-11 AM with a service to immediately follow at The Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Burial will be held at Cedar Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Allentown Rescue Mission, 355 Hamilton St. Allentown, PA 18101.
