James A. Houle

James A. Houle, 96, of Bethlehem passed away with family by his side on Feb 19, 2021. Born May 14, 1924 in Detroit Michigan, he was the son of Clarence and Clara Houle.

He will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Marie, whom he was married to for almost 70 years. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by son Richard Houle and wife Jennifer, daughter Anne Akerson and husband Jeffrey, Daughter-in-Laws Georgia Houle and Debbie Houle, 8 grandchildren: Amanda and spouse Sy, Adriane, Nicholas, Andrew and spouse Andra, John and spouse Katie, Rachel, Cathlin, and Emily and 1 great grandchild Isabelle. He is predeceased by sons William Houle, Peter Houle, Robert Houle and his sister Mary Love. James will be lovingly remembered for his devotion to his wife and love for his family, his kindness, compassion, humility, passion for learning, cleverness and wit, and sense of humor.

James received an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. He received a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan after he returned from serving in the Army during World War II. James proudly served his country in the 69th Infantry Division in Europe, also known as the “Fighting 69th”. He was the recipient of the Soldiers Medal for Valor, three Bronze Stars, and a Presidential Unit Citation. His 37 years in chemical engineering culminated in his being vice-president of Selchow and Righter Co. and President of Scrabble Crossword Game Players Inc. James was a member of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church and for several years was active in Serra International and the Mens Spirituality group.

Services will be held Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Notre Dame of Bethlehem Church, 1861 Catasauqua Road, Bethlehem, PA 18018, with a 10am calling and visitation hour immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in the church. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to Notre Dame of Bethlehem Church.
