James P. Wash

James P. Wash, 96, of Bethlehem, died on Monday, August 25, 2014. He was the son of the late John and Theresa (Freind) Vas.

He served in the U.S. Army having fought with the infantry in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII and earned the Purple Heart. He also helped to protect the Panama Canal.

He was a life-long learner, studied theology for several years and continued his educational career at Lehigh University. He became a master of the Hungarian, German and Latin languages. Following his studies he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years until retirement. His supervisor stated Jim was the hardest worker he had ever known.

He was an accomplished musician specializing in the accordion. He enjoyed playing a song in one key and mentally transposing it into every other key. His love of mathematics and music were closely interconnected. He had a keen interest in trains and traveled extensively by rail and throughout the country for many years.

Above all, he was best known and appreciated for his love of family. Throughout his life, he sought opportunities to support and care for his extended family.

Survivors: sister, Theresa Lawrence; brothers, George Vas and William Wash, sister-in-law, Goldie Vass all of Bethlehem; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Vass, brother-in-law, Jack Lawrence; and great-niece, Lauren Cressman.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, Inc. 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, preceded by visitation at 1 p.m.

Memorial Contributions may be made to World War II Veterans Committee, make checks payable to: American Veterans Center, Attn: Gift of Support 1100 N. Glebe Rd. Ste 910 Arlington, VA. Guarding their legacy and honoring their sacrifice.
