John A. “Jack” Dougherty, 92, of Bethlehem, passed away Monday, October 2, 2023 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg. His wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Dougherty, preceded him in death. Jack was born in McAdoo on May 15,1931 to John and Irene (Hulsizer) Dougherty. He graduated from Hazel Township High School, served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, and worked for the City of Bethlehem in the Public Works Department, Bureau of Engineering, for 35 years, retiring as a Project Engineer.
Jack enjoyed baseball and softball his whole life, playing with the Allentown Patriots until he was 80 years old. Known as “Coach Doc”, he volunteered at City Line Little League for many years and as an assistant girls’ softball coach at Freedom High School.
Survivors: children: Kathleen Knaak of Summerville, SC, Thomas Dougherty of Bethlehem, Maryellen (Ron) Kanarr of Allentown; sister: Irene Dougherty of Lansford; grandchildren: Konrad Knaak, Heidi Knaak, Zane Kanarr; many nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by a baby girl: Ann Mary; siblings: Bernadette Hart, Mary Krajcirik, William Dougherty, Eugene Dougherty, Anne Shannon, Robert Dougherty, and Gary Dougherty.
Service: Family and friends are invited to a viewing 10AM-11AM Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 3219 Santee Road, Bethlehem, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM and interment at Holy Saviour Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at connellfuneral.com.
