John A. “Gates” Gombosi, 92, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2013. Born in Bethlehem; he was the son of the late John and Rose (Rainer) Gombosi.
He spent 30 plus years as the first step in the justice system for several generations of South Siders - first as alderman, then as justice of the peace and finally as District Magistrate. He retired in 1991. He was well regarded and respected by both his peers and his community for his fair and common sense approach. Quoting a 1983 editorial, “The gap between Gombosis work and the rest of his life is a seamless one. He is a living definition of that subtle difference between job and vocation.” He was a life-time member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Anne Brandafi; and his many nieces & nephews extending 3 generations. He was predeceased by his sisters, Molly Horvath, Margaret Horvath, Helen Devers; and brothers, Steve and Louis Gombosi.
A viewing will be held in the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A funeral service will follow, in the funeral home. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem.
