John E. Shimer

John E. Shimer, 85, formerly of Bethlehem, died on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Gloucester Manor in Sewell, NJ. He was born March 3, 1928 in Bethlehem; son of the late Elmer and Mable (Weiland) Shimer.

John proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1948. He retired as a foreman after 33 years of service as a crane operator and cutter for the Bethlehem Steel Corp. John later worked as security guard for Cherry Tree Corporate Center where he made many friends. He enjoyed to golf at Silver Creek Country Club, where he was a member.

John will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 41 years, Marie T. Shimer; his sons, Steve Onufer and his wife, Sherry of Turnersville, NJ and Gary Onufer and his wife, Joan of Ambler, PA; daughters, Debbie Urich and her husband George of Salisbury Twp. and Georgina Czar of Bethlehem; his grandchildren, Luke, Tracy Lee, John, Jesse, Jerrick, Jolene, Dynel, Rocky and Lindsey; 13 great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his brother Arthur “Buster” Shimer and his sister Joyce. John was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer “Nook”; Henry and Wesley Shimer; sister, Edith; sons, Jonnie and Joseph and a daughter, Mary Ann Harold.

He will be lovingly remembered for his respect for others, his honesty and integrity and most importantly for the love he shared with his family.

A visitation will be held at The Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018 on Friday, September 13, 2013 from 12 to 2 PM with a ceremony to follow in the funeral home at 2 PM. Burial with military honors will be at Cedar Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society 3893 Adler Place, Suite 170 Bethlehem, PA 18017.
