John Paul Anthony

July 20, 1922 — February 19, 2013

John Paul Anthony died at the age of 90 due to complications associated with pneumonia. An Allen High School graduate, John served in the US Navy, qualified and entered the Navy V-12 program at Berea College. He later earned his BS in Engineering at Lehigh University in 1948. While at Lehigh University, he was instrumental in the formation of the Newman Center which continues its ministry today as a place for prayer and comfort for students and faculty.

After his discharge, he worked for Western Electric where he met his wife, Irene. They were married on May 14, 1949 in St. Anne's Church.

Since 1969, John has been a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Anne's church where he served as lecturer and leader of song. He also enjoyed sharing his sweet-sounding voice in the church choir. John was also one of the parish's first Eucharistic ministers and spent many years bringing communion to the homebound. John served as a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. An avid gardener, he loved growing both roses and vegetables and generously shared his homemade jams and jellies.

John is survived by his wife Irene, his daughters, Mary and Anne, his sons, Michael, John, William and Joseph and his sister, Wilma and her husband John Elnitsky,. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services: A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at St. Anne's Catholic Church 450 E. Washington Ave. Bethlehem, PA 18017 at 11 AM. A calling hour will be held at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne's Catholic Church.
