John R. Hoffner

John R. Hoffner, 90, formerly of Bethlehem, PA passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Hershey Medical Center. Son of the late Bernard C. and Elizabeth Ann (Beckert) Hoffner, he was married to Rita M. (Kenney) Hoffner for 58 years until her death in 2009.

John was a cost estimator for Bethlehem Steel for over 40 years, retiring in 1989, and attended Lehigh University. In addition, he was a founding member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Bethlehem and also belonged to St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Hershey, PA. During WWII, John served his country in the US Marine Corps. John was a professional musician and performer, playing the clarinet and saxophone in big bands throughout the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, and the Poconos.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Kathleen M. Kuchera of Hershey, Barbara H. Johnson and husband David of Escondido, CA, and Christine H. Barthold and husband Ralph Jr. of Burke, VA. He is survived by his brother Conrad C. Hoffner and wife Margaret Jane Hoffner of San Diego, sister-in-law Marie Bishop and husband W. Kenneth Bishop of Telford, PA, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard E. and Rev. William P. Hoffner, brother-in-law Paul Kenney and his wife Betty, and son-in-law Michael Kuchera Jr.

A viewing will be held 6-8 pm Friday, February 9, 2018, and 8:15-9:15 am Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am at Notre Dame Catholic Church,1861 Catasauqua Rd., Bethlehem, PA. 18017. Burial will be held at Holy Saviour Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Catholic Church or to St. Lukes Hospice, 801 Ostrum St., Bethlehem, PA 18015.
