John R. Tierney

John R. Tierney, 91, of Bethlehem, died on Thursday, August 31, 2017. He was born June 14, 1926 in Scranton, PA; son of the late Patrick and Alice (OMalley) Tierney. John was the devoted husband of 44 years to the late Loretta A. (Potash) Tierney. He will be remembered for his kindness, selflessness, and wonderful sense of humor.

John was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, earning a Purple Heart while serving during WWII. He was a lifetime railroad employee, working for the last 20 years of his career as a Car Inspector for the PBNE Railroad. For over 20 years he brought smiles to childrens faces as Santa Claus at the Westgate Mall. John loved spending time with his family and cherished his grandchildren. He also enjoyed being outdoors especially during the autumn season. John was also a very talented woodcarver; he could often be found sitting on his porch whittling.

He will be dearly missed by his children, Patrick P. Tierney and his wife, Judy; Robert J. Tierney and his wife, Karen and Maryann A. Kacar and her husband, Matthew; as well as his grandchildren, Patrick, Jr., Erin, Emily, Kelly Tierney, Melissa and Matthew Kacar. John was predeceased by his beloved sisters, Mary Nichols and her husband, Harold, Helen Kubach and her husband, Richard and beloved brothers, Joseph, Edward and Paul.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. with a service to immediately follow at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
