Dr. Joseph E. Bartos, M.D., 89 of Bethlehem passed away on Friday February 15, 2013 at home. He was born on March 18, 1923 in Bethlehem, son of the late John and Anna (Demyan) Bartos. He was the husband of Ethel (Daday) Bartos. They were married for 64 years in June of 2012.
Dr. Bartos was a family physician in Bethlehem for 52 years before retiring in 2000. He attended St. Vincent's Prep and St. Vincent's College, Villanova University and Jefferson Medical College. He completed his residency in General Practice at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem.
Dr. Bartos was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Alshain during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Northampton County Medical Society and was a school physician in the Bethlehem Area School District for many years. He also served as Medical Director of Holy Family Manor in Bethlehem and was the team physician for Bethlehem Catholic High School football team.
Dr. Bartos dedicated his life to serving others. He was a long-time volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital Clinic. He was dedicated to his church, St. Anne's of Bethlehem, serving as a Eucharistic minister and as a member of the Serra Club. He received the Fides Et Scientia Award from Bethlehem Catholic High School in 1997 for his dedication to Catholic education.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ethel, and son Joseph Bartos, Jr. with whom he resided in Bethlehem, sons Attorney John Bartos and wife Sallie of Bethlehem, Dr. Paul Bartos and wife Carol of Canton Ohio, Robert Bartos and wife Susan of Allentown, Jeffrey Bartos and wife Yvonne of Palentine, Il. Daughters Mary Jane Sickonic and husband Michael of Allentown, Susan of Newport, RI, and Peg Story and husband Bernie of Bethlehem. Grandchildren, Peter Bartos, Jennifer Roeder, Ann Bartos, Drew Bartos, Alexa Bartos, Kristen Bartos, Sarah Smith, Emily Moore, Patrick Bartos, Christopher Bartos, Stephanie Bauer, Michelle Marshank, Alan Calvo, Nicholas Calvo, Dr. Katie Story Mitchell, Michael Story, Allison Story, Mathew Bartos, Laura Bartos, Jeffrey Bartos and Bryan Bartos, and 16 great grandchildren. Sisters Josephine Balshi of Center Valley, and Annamae Guff, wife of Andrew Guff of Bethlehem.
He was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Bartos, and his brother, Reverend Monsignor John Bartos.
Funeral services will begin with prayers on Thursday, Feb 21, 2013 at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem at 9:15am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Saint Anne's Catholic Church, 450 Washington Ave. Bethlehem. Calling hours will be held from 6:00 pm-8:00pm on Wednesday at Connell's. Burial at Holy Savior Cemetery.
