Lydia A. Yob

December 29, 1939 — September 28, 2020

Lydia Yob, 81, of Bethlehem passed away on Monday, September 28, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Alexandria (Baranenko) and Andrew Schwadczenko. She was the loving wife of William L. Yob.

Lydias life story is one for the books. More than 75 years ago, she and her parents were forced by Nazis from their village in Ukraine. Taking what they could carry, they were transported by trains, trucks, wagons, and by their own two feet. They spent the next 6 years in a combination of labor and liberation camps before coming to the United States via Ellis Island. Her family knows about the courage it took and takes for families to start over in a new place and how the kindness of others - even those who dont speak your language, can mean so much.

As a young woman, Lydia began nursing school in Philadelphia, but left to care for her mother when she became ill. She put her dreams of higher education on hold for family.

Lydia loved reading, gardening, and making home-cooked meals for her family. She worked as a buyer of Gourmet Foods at the Moravian Bookshop for many years. She was active in the PTA while her children were in school and served as a “room mother”.

Her husband was the leader of the band, “The Swing Kings” and she spent countless weekends enjoying their music and organizing events.

The love she and Bill shared was unlike any other. They met while she was a candy counter clerk at Woolworths Department Store. Always known for having a song for every occasion, Bill would often sing to her, "I Found a Million Dollar Baby (in a Five and Ten Cent Store)". They were due to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary this November and he is lost without his bride.

She raised their five children with old-fashioned values and a long list of chores, while creating time for adventures and fun. Lydia loved to celebrate everything.

She loved their four grandchildren fiercely and was overjoyed to meet their great-grandson last fall. Her hazel eyes and silvery hair were her hallmarks. May her memory be eternal and flow from generation to generation.

William L. Yob will lovingly remember his bride as will their children, Donna Yob, Denise Yob Doherty and her husband Jim, Debra Fabian, William Yob and his wife Monika, Darlene Noel and her husband, Matt; Grandchildren, Joseph Fabian, Alexandria Yob, Katheryn Fabian, and Ava Noel, and great grandchild, Maverick.
