Margaret A. Szabo

Margaret A. (Salay) Szabo, 89, of Hanover Township, Lehigh County passed away on January 29 at home, surrounded by the love of her daughter and son in law. Born in Bethlehem on August 24, 1933, to Alex and Elizabeth (Racz) Salay, “Marge” attended St. John Capistrano Hungarian School. While attending, she was a member of the Guardian Angel Society and the Blessed Mother Sodality. Her family life revolved around the parish. Marge graduated from Liberty High School in 1951. She worked part time in the Lehigh University journalism department as a secretary as well as part time alongside her mother in the English department. When she left to start a family, she proudly noted that the university hired two full time employees to replace her. She also served as a Lehigh County election official for 19 years.

Marge cherished her time with her daughter, Diane, enjoying over 15 summers with her when she lived in California. The two also traveled together, with highlights being a trip to Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska. Her travels even led her to meet Mario Andretti on a cross-country flight. Despite never owning a pet, Marge was a friend of all animals. Dianes dogs, Jack, Cody, and Blue were well loved, and her backyard furry friends were always well fed! In her spare time, Marge could be found working in her yard or at her sewing machine. She sewed for family and friends, and she loved to embroider. Family and friends remember Marges kindness, warm smile, and sense of humor. She is survived by daughter Diane and son in law Peter Backus. She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Szabo.

Services: Family and friends are invited to call 5-7pm Friday, February 3, 2023 and 9-10am Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Connell Funeral Home, Inc., 245 East Broad Street-Bethlehem followed by a service at 10am. The interment will conclude with services at the Union Cemetery of Hellertown, followed by a luncheon at Braveheart Highland Pub, Hellertown.
