Maria S. Sousa

Maria S. “Silva” Sousa, 92, of Bethlehem passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024 in South Carolina. She was the wife of the late Adelino T. Sousa who died in 2021. Maria was born in Vale de Cambra, Portugal on December 17,1931 to the late Antonio Augusto Soares and Felismina (Fernandes) daSilva. In Portugal, she embraced the roles of housewife, nurse, and seamstress with grace and skill. Upon her arrival in the United States, Silva continued to showcase her talent and work ethic in the garment industry, contributing her expertise to several blouse mills. Her diligent work not only provided for her family but also added to the fabric of the industry she loved.

A devout member of the Holy Infancy Roman Catholic Church, Silva's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her involvement with the church was a testament to her commitment to her Portuguese community. Silva’s interests were a reflection of her nurturing spirit. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as cooking for her family. Her culinary gatherings were legendary, filled with laughter, love, and the aromas of her delicious dishes. Gardening was another passion she shared with her late husband. Together, they tended to their garden, and the fruits of their labor were generously shared with family and friends.

Survivors: children: Antonio F. (Michelle) Sousa of Conway, SC, Maria H. (Manuel) Carvalho of Bethlehem; brother: Fernando Soares daSilva; grandchildren: Casey Sousa, Anthony M. Sousa; great grandson: Nathan Lee Sousa. She was predeceased by her brother: Manuel Antonio Soares DaSilva.
