Mariano Cordero, 90, of Bethlehem, passed away on January 1, 2023, at his home with his devoted wife, Mercedes, by his side. Mariano will be lovingly remembered as a quiet, kind, extremely hardworking man who put his family above all else.

Mariano was born in Corozal, Puerto Rico on December 9, 1932, to the late Ramon and Aurilia (Matos) Cordero. He dedicated his life to his family after the death of his father, when Mariano was just 9 years old. Mariano began working in the sugarcane fields to provide for his mother and his siblings and assisted in raising his youngest sister.

Mariano met the love of his life, his wife, Mercedes (Huertas) Cordero, as they were partners in a wedding party. Their love, respect, and understanding of each other has contributed to the success of their marriage of 64 years. Love of family continued to be most important in the lives of Mariano and Mercedes.

As he grew older, Mariano developed a strong sense of pride for his family, his work, and his home, he formed an appreciation for all he earned in life. He was often found impeccably dressed, even when working in the yard or around the house. He was quiet until he felt strongly enough to voice his thoughts and opinions. Mariano enjoyed Saturdays, when he would take his family shopping followed by a trip to Burger King, and he enjoyed family gatherings. For Mariano, sharing meals with the ones he loved was valuable time spent forming family bonds.

Mariano continued his example of strong work ethic throughout his life, working at Bethlehem Fabricators, Bethlehem Corporation, Shawnee Penn, and Lehigh University. He was a parishioner of Holy Infancy Catholic Church where his faith led him to become a member of the Holy Name Society and the Cursillo Movement.

He will be dearly missed by his wife; children, Luis Cordero and wife, Christine Gallagher Cordero, William Cordero and wife, Gloria Flores Cordero, Lillian McFadden and husband, Patrick McFadden, George Cordero and his wife, Diana, Maria Huertas Leli&egravevre and husband, Albert, daughter-in-law, Alexandra Kulischenko, wife of Marianos late son, David Cordero; sister, Mary Forseth; as well as grandchildren, Sean, Kyle, Cory, Ryan, Joseph, Austin, Gabriella, Briana, and Dante; and great grandchildren, Janaya, Killian, and Ronan.
