Marjorie J. Barres

Marjorie Barres, 91, of Bethlehem died on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Holy Family Manor Nursing Home in Bethlehem, PA. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on February 23, 1922; daughter of the late William Henry Catchpole and Grace Margaret (Underwood) Catchpole.

Mrs. Barres was predeceased by her husband Oliver Barres, her brother Wilbur Catchpole, and her grandson John Oliver Cotter.

She graduated from Oberlin College and later earned a Masters Degree in Divinity from the Yale Divinity School and an MAT from Manhattanville College. She was a beloved K-3rd grade teacher at Midland School in Rye, NY for many years and was a parish council member, a Eucharistic minister and lector at St. Augustines Church in Larchmont, NY. She and her husband Oliver, author of One Shepherd, One Flock, were convert Protestant ministers who entered the Catholic Church in 1955.

Mrs. Barres will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her family: her daughter Margaret Cotter and her husband Paul of Cohasset, MA and their sons Nate, John (who died on May 2, 2008), and Paul; Mary Riggs and her husband Robert of Oxford, MS and their daughter Diana McKinion; Catherine Cawthon and her husband Clark of Walnut Creek, CA, and their children Laura Vestal, William and Michael; Clare Gill and her husband Grandon of Tampa, FL, and their sons Thomas and Jonathan; Most Reverend John O. Barres, the Catholic Bishop of Allentown; William Barres and his wife Ann of Hingham, MA and their daughters Katherine and Elizabeth.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 6-8 PM at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church 730 W. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Interment will follow at Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem.
