Mildred Jeanette Westgate, 90, died on November 30, 2014. Born in Philadelphia, PA; daughter of the late David Watts Field and Mildred (Werkheiser) Field, Mildred was the 4th of 5 children.
Mildred resided in Allentown since 1950 and was a resident there until her move to Whitehall Manor in February of 2010. Mildred was a Reading High School graduate, class of 1942. She was active in school theater and dance and in her church youth group at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Reading, PA. She worked in Reading from 1942-1943, then with the US Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. from 1943 to 1946. Mildred was married to her late husband of 56 years, Kenneth H. Westgate. She was very active in her community. She was President of the Allentown Optomisses Club, a member of the Womens Club in Allentown; Vice President of Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Holt Adoption Organization; English as a second language instructor for Laubach Literacy Council and cub pack den mother for Midway Manor Moravian Church Scout Troop 90. She was also active in her churches, St. Peters Lutheran and St. Timothys Lutheran of Allentown, Rosemont Lutheran of Bethlehem and the Faith At Work, now Luminos, Parachurch Organization; as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, Church Librarian, Intercessory Prayer Group Leader, Ecumenical Council Member, Lay Communion and Shutins Ministry worker, Faith at Work Lehigh Valley Conference Planner and committee member, Liberian Missions and Refugee Resettlement Program, and co-lead of the Kononia Small Group Ministries program at St. Timothys Lutheran Church with her husband, where she was a member for 54 years.
She will be dearly missed by her sister, Shirley Hillman of Tega Kay, SC; sons, Kenneth H. Westgate, Jr. husband of Kim; Barry H. Westgate; and Kevin D. Westgate and daughters, Donna L. Westgate wife of the late Thomas Oldenhage; and Lisa G. Westgate; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth on August 10, 2003; her sisters, Helen and Frances and brother, David.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 9-10:30 a.m. at New Covenant Church, 21 E Broad St, Bethlehem, PA 18018 with a service to immediately follow. A reception will be held at the church prior to interment at Forrest Hills Memorial Park, Reading. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Timothys Church, 140 S. Ott St, Allentown, PA 18104.
