Ottar Raymond Valvik 97 of Bethlehem, PA, formerly of New York, passed away at Kirkland Village in Bethlehem on Sunday, July 24, 2022. He was born in Brooklyn, New York the son of Oivind and Hildur (Vaxdale) and spent most of his life on Staten Island.
He will be lovingly remembered by his long time partner Theresa Baratta and her grandson, William Reed; his children: daughter Laurie Ronning and her husband Steve;
son Jeffrey Valvik and his wife Janet; his daughter Christine Thomas and her husband Rich. His nine grandchildren, Melissa Rowbottom (Steve); Sarah Grant (Mike); Jennifer Sharesky (Mike); Rickie Thomas (Melanie); Gregory Valvik;
Kaitlin Ronning-Minutolo (Nicholas); Kirk Thomas; Rebecca James (George); and Jonathan Thomas; his 10 great-grandchildren, Kaylee Rowbottom, Mason Rowbottom, Lily Rowbottom, Amelia Grant, Morgan Sharesky, Hailey Grant, Miabella Thomas; Theodore James, Ella Minutolo and Sienna Sharesky.
He is predeceased by his two sisters Gladis Lee and Eleanor Parsons. He is survived
by brother Harold Valvik of Staten Island and his wife Phyllis.
He served during WW11 as a Seabee in Iwo Jima. He later served in occupied Japan.
Ottar retired from the NY City Transit Authority and worked as a mechanic on the subway wheel brakes, and later on as a carpenter and locksmith. He also was an auto and diesel mechanic at Bush Terminal (Brooklyn).
He was a licensed ham radio operator and help keep emergency radio communications open during the 911 disaster. He also was a Red Cross volunteer for several of NYC Marathon races. as a radio relayer. He was a member of the NRA and used his guns at the shooting range. He enjoyed the great outdoors.
A viewing will be held 10am-1pm on Monday, August 1st at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad Street, Bethlehem, PA followed by a 1 pm service. Burial will be held with military honors at Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem, PA.
