Paul F. Kuehne, 91, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 20, 2023. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Paul and Therese C. (Hillmann) Kuehne.
A graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn with a degree in civil engineering, he began his career as a design engineer. He joined Bethlehem Steel as an ironworker with Local 40, and expanded his professional roles to field engineer, safety engineer and as Director of Safety and Fire Prevention. Memorable construction projects include the World Trade Center, 1963 World’s Fair, Madison Square Garden, and the Minute Man Missile Base in North Dakota. Paul dedicated time in leadership roles with the National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and as an advisor in the creation of OSHA. Later as a Forensic Engineer, he served as an expert witness in numerous court cases.
A conscientious resident of his community, Paul served Hanover Township for 29 years on committees including, the Planning Commission and Airport Advisory Committee. Paul was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and a past president of the Serra Club.
He is dearly missed by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary; four children, Jim Kuehne and wife, Yoly, Peggy McGovern and husband, Robert, Jennifer Kuehne, and Tom Kuehne and wife, Colleen; six grandchildren, Maegan McGovern, Eamon McGovern, Melissa Kuehne, Evan Kuehne, Stephanie Kuehne, and Ursula Kuehne; and two great-grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Mattie Boyle.
A viewing will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 3-5:00 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. On Saturday, October 28, 2023, a viewing from 9-9:45 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 1861 Catasauqua Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18018 with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
