Robert G. Unger, known as "Bob" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023, in Hellertown, PA. Born on May 23, 1935, in Hazleton, PA, to the late Glenn and Ruth Unger, Bob was known for his funny, loving, and thoughtful nature.
Bob had a fulfilling career at the Pennsylvania Power and Light Co., where he worked diligently until his retirement. Bob was a dedicated employee and a respected colleague, his work ethic and dedication inspiring many of his coworkers.
Bob’s interests were as varied and colorful as his personality. He was a passionate Ham radio enthusiast, spending countless hours in his basement, serving as a conduit for messages around the world. His love for communication and connection was evident in his dedication to this hobby. In his younger years, Bob was an instructor at Braden Airport. His love for flying was only matched by his enthusiasm for cars and boats. He could often be found engaging in animated discussions about these subjects with anyone willing to listen.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Irma Foschi-Unger, his daughters Heidi Unger of Bethlehem, PA, and Holly and her husband Rick Recker of Bath, PA. He also leaves behind his stepdaughter, Annette, and her husband, Daren Rexroad, of Essex Junction, VT. Bob was a cherished grandfather to his five step grandsons: David and Michael Reif of Bethlehem, PA, and Cooper, Brody, and Levi Rexroad of Essex Junction, VT. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Lindner, of Easton, PA.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Joan (Novistky) Unger, and his sister, Jean Drevenak. Despite these losses, Bob continued to live his life with a spirit of resilience and optimism.
Bob's life was characterized by his love for family, his passion for his hobbies, and his dedication to his work. His jovial nature and thoughtful demeanor touched the lives of all who knew him. In remembering Bob, we celebrate a life well-lived, characterized by love, joy, and an unwavering passion for his interests.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A viewing will also be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. immediately followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 450 E. Washington Ave, Bethlehem, PA 18017. Burial will be held at Church Hill Cemetery, Rt. 611, Martins Creek, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family Pillars Hospice, 3910 Adler Place, Suite 130, Bethlehem PA 18017. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Saucon Valley Manor and Family Pillars Hospice for their superb care and compassion.
