Robert M. McCann, 85, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2016; he was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Franklin, NJ on October 7, 1930, he was the son of the late Raymond and Fleta (Munson) McCann. Robert was the devoted husband of Ann (Lieberman) McCann, they were married 58 years.

Robert was a graduate of The Hill School, class of 1948. In 1952 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering from Lehigh University where he went on to join Bethlehem Steel through the company's Loop Management program.

Following his corporate orientation, he was assigned to the companys Cornwall, PA, iron ore mine as a mining engineer and later became a mine foreman there. In 1956, he was transferred to the Grace Mine near Morgantown, PA, as a mine foreman and received successive promotions there as mine captain and mine superintendent.

He was named superintendent of the Marmora Mine in Ontario, Canada, in 1967, where a year later he was appointed general superintendent. He was reassigned to the home office mining department in 1969 as an administrative assistant in mining and was promoted to manager of Bethlehems domestic ore mines in 1973. He was elected Vice President, Mining, effective September 1, 1979.

Upon retiring from Bethlehem Steel in 1985, Robert joined Stabler Companies Inc. as president of Eastern Industries Inc. From 2003-2008 he served as Executive Vice President of Stabler Companies Inc. In addition, Robert has served as a Director of the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation from 2009 to the present.

In addition to his formal college education, he completed an advanced course in business administration at Harvard University. He also served eight years in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve.

He was a member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), and served as an officer of the Lehigh Valley Section of the AIME. He was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute as well as a member and director of the American Iron Ore Association and the American Mining Congress.

He was elected to the Moravian Academy Board in 1981 and served as chairman from 1989-1993. He was named Honorary Alumni in 1993 and co-chair of the Capital Campaign in 2011. He was also the Board of Trustee Secretary for Saucon Valley Country Club.

He will be most remembered for his deep love and devotion to family & friends, quiet generosity, unwavering courage and great sense of humor. While he wasn't working he enjoyed spending time on the beach in Cape May, NJ and Florida. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching his grandchildren on the court and on the fields.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ann; children: Tyler McCann and wife, Sue, Susan McCann Blair and husband, John, Amy McCann Marker and husband, Tom; grandchildren: Zachary and Laura McCann, Adam and Ashley Blair, Matthew and Katie Marker. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Lundquist.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, at Lehigh University Packer Memorial Church, 18 University Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
