Robert Popp

Robert Popp, of Bethlehem, died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 19, 2010, after a long illness.

He was born in Lansford, Pennsylvania in 1927, the son of Anna Haberchak Popp and Joseph Popp.

He graduated from Lansford High School, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. After retirement, he took enrichment courses and earned an Associate's Degree at Northampton Community College, being a living example of "lifelong learning" for his family.

He worked as an industrial engineer, and in other capacities, at various companies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He served in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II, where he attained the designation of Able Seaman. His World War II service also included time in the Pacific Theater with the United States Army.

He was a member of Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joseph in infancy, George, Charles and John; and his sister, Martha.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Solomon Popp, at home; two daughters, Elaine Bernstein, and her husband Dr. Richard Bernstein of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Popp Koller, and her husband Craig Koller of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandchildren, Anna Morgan Bernstein and Hayden Reid Koller; one sister, Elaine Abbott, and her husband, Dr. Richard Abbott, of Rochester, New York; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lehigh Valley Hospice for their compassionate care shown to Bob during his long illness. Additionally, the family would like to extend special thanks to Physician Assistant Jason Sommer and Dr. Melvin Steinbook.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Connell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private.

Memorial contributions can be made to Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, and sent in care of Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18018.
