Robert T. Smith, 85, of West Lawn, died on Thursday, April 5, 2012 in Manor Care of Sinking Spring under hospice care.

He was born August 17, 1926 in Easton; son of the late Lester B. and Beatrice Ockenhouse Smith.

Robert was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 40 years, Dolores Johnson Smith in 1999.

Robert was a graduate of Easton High School where he excelled in Baseball and Football. In 1944, he turned down the offer to be drafted to the Philadelphia Phillies to pursue football on scholarship at Penn State University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Ferrous Metals.

After 35 years, Robert retired from the Bethlehem Steel Co. in 1984 where he was a Supervisor in the Heavy Forge Dept. He later served as a Bethlehem Area School District Bus Driver and Monitor.

Robert was an avid golfer and bowler and was past president of the Bethlehem Area Bowling Assoc. for over 10 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Fleas Club of Easton and a member of the Villas Fishing Club, The Villas, NJ.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Lisa Sowers and her husband Daryl of West Lawn, PA; nieces, Sandra Miller of Lebanon, PA and Diane Smith of Albrightsville and his nephew Lester Smith of Bath.

Robert was predeceased by his brother Burton Smith.

The family will receive friends at the Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018 on Monday, April 9, 2012 from 9-10 AM with a service to immediately follow in the funeral home.

Interment will be held at Holy Ghost Cemetery.
