Sister M. Lawrence Waxman, O.S.F.

February 1, 1925 — April 2, 2014

Sister M. Lawrence, 89, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis, United States Province, in her 65th year of Profession, died on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in Bethlehem, Pa.

Sister entered the community from St. Michael Church, Jessup, Pa. in 1948 and professed her first vows in 1949 in Mount Assisi Convent Chapel in Pittsburgh, Pa. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

During her years of ministry, Sister Lawrence taught the middle and junior high grades in many of our parish schools where our sisters ministered in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She was a principal in Jersey City and Clifton, N.J. and in Northampton and Palmerton/Slatington in Pennsylvania. From 1992-93, she used her knowledge of the Slovak language and taught English to the sisters in the Slovak and Czech Republics. Sister Lawrence was very active in the Conference of Slovak Religious. During her last six years in active ministry, she visited the sick and elderly and helped with development for the community before moving to Villa Clare at Monocacy. Sister was very active in arts and crafts besides her ministry of prayer, and became known as the “Angel Maker.” For many years she was the community photographer for all the important events.

Sister Lawrence was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Susan (Repko) Waxman, brothers Emil, Joseph, George, Rudolph and Frank; sisters Anne and Margaret. She is survived by her religious community and her sister Josephine, nieces and nephews.

The viewing will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 and 10-11 a.m. on Monday, April 7 at Monocacy Manor, Bethlehem, Pa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Monocacy Manor. Arrangements have been made by Connell Funeral Home, Bethlehem, Pa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the School Sisters of St. Francis Retirement Fund, 395 Bridle Path Road, Bethlehem, Pa. 18017.
