Sophie Chayka

Sophie (Kapuscak) Chayka, 89, of Freemansburg, died peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Saucon Valley Manor in Hellertown. Born December 30, 1923 in Northampton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Catherine (Ofsanka) Kapuscak. Sophie was married to William J. Chayka with whom she celebrated 63 years of marriage until his death on March 25, 2009.

Sophie was a life-long, active member of Sacred Heart Church. She worked at Lehigh University in the Classics Department for ten years. Sophie owned and operated a corner grocery store for twenty years.

She was an extraordinary woman loved by many as a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and wife. She was a passionate gardener and seamstress, a wonderful cook, baker, and avid reader.

Her home was always open to family and friends and filled with joy and laughter.

Sophie will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her two daughters, Susan Gates of Virginia and Carol Parker of Bethlehem; son, John Chayka of Bethlehem Township; seven grandchildren, Katie Gates of Washington D.C. and Billy Gates of Virginia, Sarah Parker of Pittsburgh, Nick Parker of Maine, Sam Parker of Vermont, Annelise Chayka of Philadelphia and Allison Chayka of Freemansburg.

Sophie was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Preletz, Catherine Resetar, Elizabeth Buckler, Pauline Blew, and Helen Scheetz and brothers, Paul and Charles Kapuscak.

A calling hour will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Connell Funeral Home 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM followed by a service at 12 PM. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery in Bethlehem.
