Sue A. Simmons, 92, of Springtown, PA, died quietly on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at her home surrounded by loving family. She was born in Pleasants County, WV, the daughter of the late Guy and Jesse (Idlemann) Ashby. She was the loving wife of Kenneth D. Simmons. High school sweethearts in Pennsboro, WV, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past August. Sue received her Bachelor of Arts in Music from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1946. She taught grade school before devoting her life to her family. She, Ken and their family lived in Marietta, OH, Martinsburg, WV, New Canaan, CT, Severna Park, MD, Allison Park, PA, Tampa, FL and finally Springtown, PA, where they have lived for the past 37 years. Wherever they lived, Sue was involved in church life, often through her love of music. She was an avid reader, a gracious hostess, accomplished home cook, seamstress (quilts for each of her grand and great-grand babies and wedding dresses for her two daughters), pianist, gardener, lover of flowers, master crossword puzzle solver and a devoted fan of the METS. Along the way she became a golfer with a hole-in-one to her credit. Above all, she found her greatest pride and satisfaction in her familys happiness and their love for each other. Kind, gentle, loving, giving and accepting would best describe her.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Ken, their children: Kathy Simmons and husband, Ron Scherer, of New York City; Linda Cameron and husband, Douglas, of Bethlehem, PA; Kenneth “Chip” Simmons, Jr. and wife, Judy, of West Chester, PA; and W. Scott Simmons and wife, Stephanie, of Hinsdale, IL; and her adoring five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Sue is also survived by her brother, Thomas J. Ashby, of Bridgeport, WV. She was predeceased by her sister, Madalyne Dunbar, and her brothers, the Reverend Hugh Ashby and William Ashby.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017.
