Verna Makarchuk, 82, of Bethlehem, died on Saturday September 3, 2011. Born in Bethlehem on July 10, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Sivulka Turanchik. She was the wife of the late Michael Makarchuk who died in 2001.
She was a graduate of Liberty High School and Bethlehem Business College and employed by the Bethlehem Steel offices. Verna was a life- long member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church where she was a very active parishioner serving as Trustee of the church and a member of many other committees throughout the years. She will be remembered by many for her years of proudly making pierogi and Easter bread and traditional bake goods to raise funds to support the building of a new church.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Gregory M. at home and Michael J. Makarchuk and his wife Ayako of San Diego, CA; brother, Edward of Tequesta, Florida; in-laws, Mary Turanchik, Helen Borovies, and Nancy and Anna Makarchuk; caregiver, Maryann Turanchik, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, John, Andrew, and George Turanchik; and sisters, Helen, Anna, Pauline, and Sophie Turanchik, Julia Pastelyak, Irene Horvath, Margaret Popp, and Mary DeNofa.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, where viewing hours will be held on Thursday September 8th from 6 to 9 p.m., Parastas beginning at 6 p.m., and again on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Panchida beginning at 10 a.m. An 11 a.m. Office of Christian Burial will follow in the church, 1140 Johnston Drive, Bethlehem. Interment will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem.
