Violet Rose Uliana

November 4, 1926 — November 1, 2015

Violet Rose (Machek) Uliana, of Bethlehem, died on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at her residence with her loving family by her side after a several year battle with cancer. She would have celebrated her 89th birthday on November 4th. Violet was born in Primrose, PA; daughter of the late Fortunat “Andy” and Mary (Sray) Machek. She was the devoted and loving wife of 45 years to the late John Henry Uliana, who died in 2001. She was preceded in death by her three sisters and three brothers and her son James Uliana.

Violet attended Duquesne University and worked as a medical technician in the Pittsburgh area, before marrying John Uliana. In marriage they raised eight children and Violet dedicated her life to her family. They moved from Pittsburgh to Bethlehem in 1965. Even with a large family, Violet always had more than enough time and love for each one of her children. She was the proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren and loved spending time with them, especially on vacations to the Outer Banks, playing Scrabble online, holiday meals and when they visited her home. In addition to her family, Violet was deeply committed to Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church, where she was an active and devoted parishioner for 50 years. She was past president of the Bethlehem Serra Club. Her Catholic faith guided her life and was one of the greatest gifts she passed on to her children.

Violet loved crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, skilled quilter and gardener. She worked at Sawyer and Johnson Florist when her children were grown. She was also an active member of the Bethlehem Garden Club, helping the club win national recognition for one of their gardens.

Violet will be dearly missed by her family: Maria (Uliana) Dax and husband Bill of Orefield, PA, Stephen Uliana and wife Laura of Clarks Summit, PA, David Uliana and wife Sarah Mouring of Towson, MD, Thomas Uliana and wife Diane of Chesapeake, VA, Paul Uliana and wife Virginia of Bethlehem, PA, Joseph Uliana and wife Daphne of Bethlehem, PA and Matthew Uliana and wife Kelly of Austin, TX.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 6, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018.
