William Yawney

William Yawney, Private, United States Army, Born March 22 1921, Died July 7, 1944.

While Serving in the United States Army, Company D, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, William was killed during a Japanese attack on U.S> forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands. His remains were not returned to his family. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

After many years of searching by his family his remains were recently discovered on the Island of Saipan and identified through DNA technology in Hawaii and being returned to Pennsylvania for full military burial in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Cemetery in Northampton, PA.

William grew up in Freemansburg, PA and attended school there. As a young man he worked at Laraus Silk Mill and then the Bethlehem Steel before joining the Army. He enjoyed sports and played softball and basketball in Freemansburg.

He is survived by his brother, Harry W. Yawney of S. Burlington, VT, sister, Olga wife of Nick Zawarski of Bethlehem, nephew, John Yawney of Allentwon, niece, Carol Ann Sieling of Bethlehem and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on May 25, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Cemetery on Main St. in Northampton, PA at 10:30 AM. Arrangements are by Connell Funeral Home, Inc.
